When Internet Goes Dark [SOPA]

January 18, 2012 when internet goes dark againts Internet Censorship in US, the free software community had launch a 24 hours campaign to protest SOPA known as H.R 3261.

With the power of internet and online community shows how intenet is really amazing fsf.org, libreplanet.org, php.net, google.com, wordpress.org, wikipedia and other internet services goes black that’s gives blackeye to SOPA to pull out by it’s chief sponsor.

Here is some screenshot I get that show how internet is really great.

PHP w3Schools Certified

I finally completed and passed the w3schools PHP & MySQL certification, even I heard the w3fools claims againts w3school.

I still continue to get the certification, first because it’s already my plan since last year, second PHP is not their concern and third its just for a PHP foundation and I would like to get PHP certification while I ‘m still waiting for php 5.4 and finally get the certification on Zend.

The w3school offer is good enough to document my knowledge in PHP, The exam is quite good not easy but never to tough is 70 random question about PHP and MySQL.

I passed the exam but to far to get perfect score or to get the Excellency Degree notation for those who get 95%.

Overall is good experience and nice to have PHP certification, I can’t wait to PHP Zend Certifcation but I still need to wait for PHP5.4 to come.

Startup Weekend Manila Experience

It’s a one month later after the Startup Weekend good thing that I found time to write up and share some experience on startup weekend manila.

1 month before when I get news that Philippines will be having its first Startup Weekend organize by ProudCloud and Globe Telecommunication, It’s so excited to attend to this event and as I started to prepared some stuff and the idea that I would like to pitches I’m hoping that I could build a team and win this event.

From the original 38 registered pitches its blow up to 62 scheduled pitches and on that day everyone is so cool and great in sharing their ideas, I’m amaze to hear every one’s idea, some have a cool name but not that so interested there is also cool and funny idea but it’s already existing.

I prepared my pitches 1 week before but as the floor is getting hot I need to change some of my lines to get some attention.

Here my pitch on startup weekend.

Hi I’m Aris Royo software engineer at Accenture, [for passion I use Gnu/Linux, PHP and MySql on web development .] and I came here to solve your entire problem (They all laugh)

Today’s web is becoming more destructive and un-friendly; we share a lot of information that important to us but boring for someone. We do this not intentionally but because of temptation and design of the social networking around us.

I would like to build social tools where users have a full control on a social content and that will also act as a social journal. Technology like curation and object tagging will be use to filter out information. For example you can add a friend and select only his/her post and photos that is only related to technology that aligns to your preference.

To make this idea materialize I need a designer and a marketer. So please welcome my idea slumnote!

People vote ideas that sound interested to them until I realize the problem that people doing on startup week end that made the event spirit broken.

Some ideas has already existing product and website and the most discouraging is that there is a group of person joined the event produce by well known proprietary software and It’s a shame that they also like to monopolize this independent event.

I joined on LaunchUr.WS group a search and listing tools for first time sites the idea is great and we always been ask what our different with Google.

The most important thing that I learn is the verification of idea because you don’t want to waste your time working on the product that there’s no one is going to use, each team talk about what they think about each other idea and we also talk and discuss our idea to startup weekend mentor.

Three 3 day of knowledge and experience sharing is really fun.
Over all is great experience, the 3 days is an overwhelming knowledge, expertise, fun and excitement.

The top 6 winner is really deserving and the two of them was invited me to join on first day but since I already committed to LaunchUr.WS I spent my time to this great group of people that almost new to me.

Defend The Freedom To Install Free Software

Microsoft’s announcement that if computer makers wish to distribute machines with the Windows 8 compatibility logo, they must implement a system called “Secure Boot.” or better call RESTRICTED BOOT.

Secure/Restricted Boot is anti-freedom to run software that you want on your owned purchase computer it’s another act of monopoly for user to use proprietary software only!

Restricted Boot is disastrous restriction on computer users and not a security feature at all.

Free Software Foundation is calling for action and signature to support its campaign

Free Software Is For Freedom

“Free software” is a matter of liberty, not price.
To understand the concept, you should think of
“free” as in “free speech,” not as in “free beer.”

Is a matter of user’s rights to run, copy,
distribute, study, change and Improve the
software.

Here is the four essentials of software freedom.

The freedom to run the program, for any purpose.
The freedom to study how the program works, and
change it so it does your computing as you wish.
The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your
neighbor.
The freedom to distribute copies of your modified
versions to others.

Study and sharing is one of the unique kind and
spirit of free software and open source
community.

When we found bug we fix it and share the solution to
community.

We improve software by using it, studying, provide
feedback , comments, suggestions, answers and
contribute in any ways.

When we stuck with the issue we don’t bump our head on
monitor or with the key board we simply ask the
community and find resource online.

Know Your Proprietary

Proprietary Restricting Us from this Freedom.

On Proprietary You may not allowed to work around any
technical limitations in the software; reverse engineer,
decompile or disassemble the software, make more
copies.

Some Important Things You Should Know About
Window 7 License.

Your Windows license agreement is between you and the PC maker,
not between you and Microsoft.
The OEM uses special imaging tools to install Windows on PCs they
manufacture. When you first turn on the PC, you accept a license
agreement with the OEM and with Microsoft.
The PC maker is required to provide support for Windows. Except for
security issues, Microsoft will not provide free support for any issues you have with Windows purchased from an OEM.
Your copy of Windows is locked to the PC on which you purchased it.
You cannot transfer that license to another PC.

Vendor Lockin One Negative Contribution of Proprietary.

In economics, vendor lockin, also known as proprietary lockin or customer lockin, makes a customer dependent on a vendor for products
and services, unable to use another vendor.
Customer are not allowed to modify software when they request to get
the source code vendor discontinue the support and service.
Customer are also not allowed to share the software to other,
Change request are subjected to a cost.
All person who have access on the source code are subjected to no
compete policy.

The Two Pillar GNU/Linux

I believe that theres is only one operating system name
GNU and Linux is one of it’s kernel.

1980′s Richard Stallman Start the development GNU System.

1985 Free Software hired
someone to begin developing a kernel. They found a microkernel,
which had been developed by a government funded project and use it on button layer it took them year to run the system and then it’s not
working well.

By 1990, we had almost all of the pieces of GNU.

1991 a college student in Finland “Linus Torvalds” developed
another kernel using the monolithic, traditional design, and he got it
to barely run in less than a year. This kernel, which was called
“Linux”, initially was not Free Software.

in 1992, he changed the licenses and adopted a Free Software
license, namely the GNU General Public License which I had written
to use as the license for the pieces of GNU that we were developing.

The development of Linux was an important
contribution to the Free Software community.

But we must first give credit to GNU Project that
promote the values of freedom that GNU stands
for, and to inform others that those values of
freedom brought this system into existence.

Uphold, Advocate And Use Free Software

It’s not easy to switch to free software but It’s
not that difficult to appreciate freedom.

If you going to build a thesis select to use Free Software after you
completed your application, I challenge you to share it to public.

Your welcome to contribute by doing blog or engage in speaking to
the public and talk about free software and open source.

You may help free software by being an expert user, answering
question and providing comment is one of the important task of
advocating free software and open source.

I encourage you to advocate free software by building focus
community that will allow you to collaborate, share and learn.

Restricting the user to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve software is a sin for all humanity that lives from the past, present and to the future!

The success of Free/Libre Open Source Software is start in the simple act of appreciation to the value of your freedom and enjoys using it free.

The Three (3) House Bill That May Change Technology In Philippines

1. House Bill No. 1011 – Promoting the development and use of free and open source software in the Philippines (FOSS).

The freedom to run, copy, distribute, study and change the software is the essential part of this House Bill, but the fact that Philippines has a small amount of budget to Information and technology are only one of the most reason why our government must switch to free or open source software. Despite of higher cost of proprietary software it is the most prone to virus and security vulnerability not like a free software GNU/Linux that been used most in the top super computer in the world.

2. House Bill No. 195 – Accelerate the development of Information Technology Startup by Providing IT Venture and Funds. “IT Venture Capital Fund”.

We have a lot of talent and high skilled technology expert but the problem is they are now working with some biggest IT company, that’s belong at least to top fortune 500. We also have a small penetration of Startup Company and despite that most of them are bootstrapping they are taking us lead and hopefully snatch a success spot.

With this house bill I believe more Filipino will going to be engage and will be encourage in building and starting a startup.

3. House Bill No. 1230 – The Creation of Department of Information Technology and Communication.
Information Technology is absolute need and part of our daily life that’s why we should carefully watch over it how it’s change and apply to us in daily basis, we need this department not only to take care about our technology but at least to guard our freedom in software and hopefully this department will hold the Importance of House Bill No. 1011 and not just become an arena of proprietary software.

AVG Free Linux Antivirus

Gnu/Linux operating system is more secure than windows but it’s doesn’t mean that you will ignore and take aside the installing of antivirus; there are only few available antivirus for Gnu/Linux.

I’m gland that I found out the AVG antivurs one of windows free antivirus has also offer a total free anti virus for linux. The cool things about AVG linux antivirus is there is no UI yes User Interface, means the start , update and scan must run in command interface witch cool in Gnu/Linux.

Here is the list of AVG Linux command.

To start the AVG run the following command: sudo avgctl –start
To update your AVG Antivirus database: sudo avgupdate
To scan the whole computer or folder run the following command:

sudo avgscan / – Scan all
sudo avgscan – Scan file name
sudo avgscan – Scan folder name

Leaving Developer Community Facebook Garage

For how many times I hear, read and proof the importance of having a focus into one project, so today I finally made my decision to at least lessen some activity on my part and have full time on my own personal project.

So Starting today I will leaving (but not on the jet plane) the developer community facebookgarage.ph to JP Loh a developer enthusiast that will now be handling the coordination and will take lead the Facebook Developer Garage in Philippines , Welcome him and support our new Garage Host.

I will now take my time and focus on my personal project.

Hosting the facebook garage in Philippines brings me a wonderful and unique opportunity to meet and take lead in some matters our great developer in the country.

Once again change do happen, there’s a wide range of opportunity that in the end it’s how are we going take this new opportunity.

My Daily Git

I finally complete learning how to Git and after a few days of reading and testing I made some list of Git command that will help from a daily programming routine.

$git init – Create empty git project.

$git status – Check the status of a current branch.

$git log – To check the branch commit log and
information.

$git add – To add file/change to Git
repository.

$git commit –m “Comment Text” – To commit changes
and put comment.

$git branch – Create a new branch name
from the current branch.

$git tag - Create a tag of a branch of
the current state.

$git tag and $git branch – To list down tag and
branch name

$git checkout - To switch to different
branch

$git checkout –b - Create a new branch
name with automatic check out.

$git diff – To
check the difference within two branch

$git branch –d – Delete the specific
branchname.

$git merge –no-ff -Recursively merges
the current branch.

$git stash – To save the current changes in a work
space.

$git stash apply – To apply the stash in the current
branch state.

$git stash list – get the list of stash updates.

$git stash clear – Clear stash updates.

$git pull - Full repository and to
update all branch

$git clone path>. – Clone / Copy repository.

$git pull -
Pull specific branch name from origin.

$git push origin – Push update of the current branch
to origin

$git push origin - To push the
new/specific branch to origin.

$git push origin : - To delete the
specific branch name from the origin.

$git reset – hard – Roll back base on
tag state.

$git remote rm origin – remove remote origin.

$git remote add origin – Add an origin
repository.

$git reset –hard origin/master – Update your master
branch to origin (overwriting update).

Git is a free & open source, distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency.
